Her roots rest somewhere between bossa and three four time, Sade and Holly Cole, pop and jazz. Apart from that the 34year-old singer and writer Milla Kay is based in Hamburg.
Her debut album "Out of Place", released on August 31, 2007 on Rhythm Attack/Edel Contraire, and produced together with her companion and husband Hauke Kliem, features many London musicians as the production started with a several weeks long stay in the British metropolis. Milla and Hauke roamed the jazz-clubs, their demo in their bag, searching for the right musicians for spontaneous studio-recordings. And soon they found excellent musicians like e.g. the upright-bassist Mark Hodgson who accompanied a list of well-known artists from Sting to Jamie Cullum.
This first step resulted in further exciting contacts and accordingly they came to visit London over and over again.
The result is a mix of live recordings and home-studio editing by the harbour in Hamburg that did not only appeal to the music-press (cd-tip in "Stern", "Elle", sound-tip in "Audio", etc).
Their guitar-based and "hand-looped" songs have already been presented live in Berlin, Cologne, and of course in Hamburg, for instance on the Reeperbahn-festival, to name a few.
Moreover did they have convincing appearences at internationally renowed festivals like the "Ingolstädter Jazztage" and the "Aalener Jazzfest". The latter granted the band of five with Philipp Steen on double bass, keyboardist Martin Hornung and Heinz Lichius on drums an invitation to the "SongNight" at "JazzBaltica" 2008, which was broadcasted live on "3sat".
